Medicolegal implications of COVID-19 – Dr James Thorpe, Medicolegal Consultant and Senior Medical Educator, Medical Protection Society Ireland. James joined Medical Protection as a medicolegal consultant in 2014 and has extensive experience assisting healthcare professionals in Ireland with the full range of ethical and legal problems arising from their clinical practice. He also helps doctors to reduce their medicolegal risk through his work as a senior medical educator within the Medical Protection Risk Prevention team. James has completed an LLM in medical ethics and law and trained in general and vascular surgery prior to moving into medicolegal work. As a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, he is fully aware of the challenges facing the surgical profession following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Compensation and Tort Reform – Mr Tom Hates, Head of Delivery Services, Medical Protection Society Ireland joining in March 2020. He is a solicitor who has spent the majority of his time in private practice with over 25 years experience in medical law and malpractice, defending medical practitioners in relation to, claims for compensation, the Medical Council and Statutory Inquiries.
