Biographies
Prof. Eva Doherty, Director of Human Factors in Patient Safety, RCSI
Eva is a practising clinical psychologist, Associate Professor and Director of the Human Factors in Patient Safety (HFPS) training, research and assessment programme at the National Surgical Training Centre, Department of Surgical Affairs, RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences. The HFPS training is a mandatory component of the postgraduate professional training for surgical, emergency medicine, radiology and ophthalmology trainees. The programme provides interactive workshops for trainees and more recently for consultants on topics which include medical error, risk management, communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, decision-making, open disclosure, emotional intelligence, crisis management, resilience, professionalism and leadership. Eva pioneered and currently directs the academic Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Human Factors in Patient Safety which is an inter-professional one/two year part-time blended programme. Eva’s recent publications and research interests include communication issues in Irish hospitals; personality factors in medical education, emotional intelligence, medical training and non-technical competencies; and the assessment of improvements and remediation of communication skills.
Ms Barbara Wren, Consultant Psychologist, Wren Psychology Associates
Barbara Wren is a Chartered Psychologist whose company develops and delivers bespoke, innovative psychology interventions for healthcare organisations and their staff in the UK and Ireland. She has a keen interest in working with doctors, and in using narrative to develop individual, role and system resilience as described in her book “True Tales of Organisational Life” (Karnac 2016).. She has drawn from this work to provide psychology input to the Human Factors course at RCSI for the past five years, working with Professor Eva Doherty and using story to explore how to manage the emotional impact of clinical work, and of tough healthcare contexts, over the course of a medical career.

Patrick Williams is an SpR in Radiology University Hospital Waterford. Prior to his current post he completed Basic Specialist Training in general medicine with the RCPI. His research interests include neuroimaging and acute stroke, and the role of literature in the medical curriculum.
