Dear Colleagues,

This year the Waterford Surgical October Meeting(WSOM) in conjunction with The Surgical Section of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland will take place on Saturday 9th October 2021.  This year the event will be going virtual with a live broadcast from the HSE / RCSI Education Facility, University Hospital Waterford and streamed through our advanced hosting portal. This immersive virtual event will offer insights from National and International speakers, networking opportunities and a virtual exhibition space.

The theme for this year’s meeting is “Robotics and Innovation in Surgery”. As usual the meeting will also include our Orthopaedic Colleagues who will have a specific research prize session and guest speaker Ms. Ruth Delaney, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Santry Sports Clinic.

This year’s “Gordon Watson Lecture” will be delivered by Professor The Lord Darzi of Denham, Paul Hamlyn Chair of Surgery, Imperial College London.  He will talk on the theme of ‘Surgery, The Robot, Global Health and Innovation’.

Dr. Noel Donlon will deliver the “William O’Keeffe” Lecture and the meeting will include a research section for the “William O’Keeffe” Memorial Prize which will be awarded for the best original paper.  Abstracts for the research session should be submitted to the Department of Postgraduate Surgery, HSE/ RCSI Education Facility, University Hospital Waterford via e-mail to jennie.oleary@hse.ie  not later than Wednesday 1st September 2021. There will also be an Orthopaedic Research Prize. Please see attachment for details of abstract submission

The “Brendan Devlin” prize will be awarded for the best case presented as a mini-poster in keeping with our theme of Robotics and Innovation in Surgery”. There will also be prizes for the best full size general surgery poster and for the best full size orthopaedic poster on a wide spectrum of General Surgery and Orthopaedic issues.  The closing date for these competitions is also Wednesday 1st September 2021.

We hope that this programme of events will be of interest to many surgeons treating increasingly aged patients in the modern era.  We look forward to seeing you all virtually on Saturday 9th October 2021.
