Aspire Fellowship in Orthoplastic Surgery

Post Duration Commencing Eligibility
Mater Hospital 1 Year July 2025

Available to doctors who have obtained CCST and are within two years of post CCST* or eligible for entry into the specialist division of Plastic Surgery (IMC). Applications for this Fellowship will be accepted from surgical trainees in any surgical discipline.

This position is open to both Plastics & T&O trainees

Fellowship Details

The Aspire fellowship in Orthoplastic surgery will provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to participate in the increasing role our newly developed Orthoplastic service at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH) plays in major trauma and secondary Orthoplastic reconstruction.  

The fellowship will provide advanced training in: 

  • Limb reconstruction surgery, with an emphasis on trauma, but also prosthetic joint and bone infection, spinal trauma, and peripheral nerve surgery. 
  • Participation in collaborative peri operative planning and communication in providing quality care
  • Osteosynthesis
  • Soft tissue reconstruction and microsurgery, including nerve and microvascular surgery.

In this role, the fellow will: 

  • Act as a link between the specialties of Orthopaedic and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 
  • Oversee Orthoplastic case and theatre list planning, 
  • Attend Orthoplastic outpatient clinic
  • Co-ordinate of a new Orthoplastic multi-disciplinary team meeting with infectious diseases, microbiology and radiology colleagues. 

The fellow will participate in Orthoplastic spinal cases which will be facilitated on the daily spinal theatre operating lists. There will also be opportunities to participate in complex prosthetic joint infection reconstruction cases. The fellow will be trained in specific practices in Orthoplastic surgery, such as combined open fracture debridement and soft tissue flap reconstruction.  

The fellow will be responsible for the maintenance of a newly developed database for open fractures. They will manage within the multi-disciplinary team that post-operative clinical photography and radiography is as per our new department protocol and learn the importance of bespoke patient education.

*The RCSI/NDTP recognise that those currently in Training with an expected CSCST in  2023 may not fall in line with a CSCST date of June 2019 and applications will be considered from interested candidates who may have a CSCST within a reasonable timeframe of commencement of the fellowship.
