The increasingly complex nature of training has been driven by the introduction of new technology, increasing patient expectations, complexity of patient care including the increasing age of many patients.  All of these factors impact and the  RCSI has developed a trainer education strategy that is designed to provide trainers with the skills necessary to continue to provide training to trainees at all levels of training. This can be further broken down into three levels.


Level 1

Train the Trainer – Online course
This course introduces the skills and knowledge needed to be an effective trainer in a hospital context and provides an overview of the training curriculum. There are two modules in this course: 

 

  • Trainer Skills provides an overview of effective training techniques in areas such as objective setting, giving feedback, and coaching and mentoring 
  • The ISCP Curriculum outlines the frameworks used in the Irish Trainee system to assess the fitness competencies of trainees.  Certain areas such as Capabilities in Practice (CiPs) and Generic Professional Capabilities (GPCs) 

 

By the time you finish the course, you will be able to: 

 

  • Set clear learning objectives, provide effective feedback and apply coaching and mentoring strategies to support trainees growth across both technical and professional competencies 

 

The course includes a number of practical scenarios and reflective exercises 


Level 2 

In person Train the Trainer Course. 

This course is an integral part of the Human Factors in Patient Safety Course and is compulsory for all trainees prior to Certificate of Completion of Surgical Specialist Training (CCST). 

The course is open to all trainers  


Level 3 

Advanced Train the Trainer Masterclass

The RCSI will be introducing a series of Trainer Masterclasses, these are aimed at trainers who would like to further develop their skills in giving effective feedback and managing the trainee in difficulty. 

These one-day modules are designed to equip trainers with the skills necessary to effectively support trainees facing personal or professional challenges. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the systems and resources available to both trainers and trainees, and will have the opportunity to develop and refine the skills needed to navigate complex and sensitive interactions with confidence and professionalism.
