A critical part of the RCSI Surgical Affairs Strategy is to Develop a Robust Quality Assurance Programme and Capability for the National Surgical & Emergency Medicine Training Centre, and other functional units within the broader remit of RCSI Surgical Affairs.
To deliver excellence in surgical education and training, the establishment of consensus on an agreed set of standards for all training posts is a key strategic quality initiative, which has involved significant stakeholder engagement. The current versions of our standards and guidelines are available for download through the downloads section of this website.
This set of standards is not all-encompassing. They, however, reflect the minimum set of standards that all training sites should aspire to. They also complement the Medical Council criteria for evaluation of training sites which support the delivery of surgical and emergency medicine training. These standards form the basis for training post inspections and audit for all training posts.
The accreditation process is a multi-stakeholder process designed to ensure that our training posts meet the requirements of our standards. This process is supported by the JCST’s Specialty Advisory Committees (SACs).
