Course Overview
This course is a combined cardiothoracic and vascular surgery course that will take place in our wet lab facility in the national surgical training center. The course will start with basic vascularanastomosis techniques using synthetic and animal models. Other vascular techniques such as lower limb vein harvesting and open and endovascular aortic aneurysm repair will be performed on part-task trainers and endovascular VR simulators.
Chest drain insertion and the principles of sternotomy will be demonstrated and practiced. The placement of ports and the scope for thoracoscopy (VATS) will be demonstrated. Interactive discussions on partial lobectomy of the lung and cardiac suturing from trauma will take place through case-based discussions.

Learning outcomes
- Knowledge of the principles of vascular anastomosis
- Practice in lower limb vein harvesting for cardiac bypass procedures
- Familiarity with the principle decision-making around open and endovascular aortic aneurysm repair procedures
- Practice in chest drain insertion
- Applying a pledget-armed suture for a hole in the heart
- Knowledge of the endoscopic technique of partial lobectomy of the lung
