After setting up your kit, please download the InsTrac software.

InsTrac requires core i5 or newer processor for optimal performance.

This runs locally on your your PC.

Download InsTrac Software for Windows

  1. Download InsTrac by clicking on the link above.
  2. Double click on the .exe file.
  3. Follow the on screen instructions. Some anti-virus software may flag InsTrac as being unrecognised. It is safe to continue.
  4. When installing on some versions of Windows, you may get a message saying: “Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable (x86)” – with three options: “Repair, Uninstall, Close”. This does not effect the running of InsTrac – click Close.
  5. Some machines may then say: “Are you sure you want to cancel” – click “yes”.
  6. The program should then be installed on your computer and a shortcut to it positioned on your desktop.
  7. Before you run InsTrac, plug in the USB camera from the eoSim simulator. If you don’t plug the camera in before running InsTrac it can cause problems with the video. Address this by closing InsTrac, plugging in the USB camera and re-opening InsTrac.
  8. Note: some Windows 7 users may need to install this driver to allow InsTrac to control the eoSim camera: Install Logitech C615 USB Camera Driver

The user manual gives full instructions on how to use the trainer. In order to keep a record of all your practice sessions, after you have completed an exercise it is important to do the following:

  1.  Download InsTrac from the link above.
  2. Double click on the .dmg file which downloads from this link.

  4. Go to your Applications folder and double click on InsTrac.
  5. Note: depending on the users settings, some Macs may show a warning saying ‘cannot open as not downloaded from the Apple App store’ or similar. In this case, press and hold the ‘ctrl’ key then click on InsTrac, and select Open. This will only be required the first time. It will subsequently open by a double click in the usual way.

You should have a crystal clear, well-focused image at all times. If pressing the refocus button (press and wait for 5 seconds while it refocuses) doesn’t bring the image into focus, remove the practice model (e.g. peg board) from the eoSim, click refocus (so it focuses on the floor of the simulator), then reintroduce the practice model and click refocus.

Getting the correct amount of light is important. In most light conditions it may be necessary to use the built-in LEDs, but in very bright natural light these may not be needed. Clicking the refocus button also adjusts the exposure. A few refocuses may be needed to find the correct exposure level.

Tracking: you should see small cross hairs on the instrument coloured bands at all times. If not, check that the light is optimized, and if using with only artificial light, try the ‘night mode’

Applying the coloured bands to the instrument tips: Red is for the right hand instrument and Blue for the left. We advise using the non-ratcheted grasper, scissors and knot pusher in your dominant hand, and the ratcheted grasper in your non-dominant hand. Wrap the coloured stickers around the distal instrument shafts, taking care not to cover any moving parts.

An overview of the Laparoscopic Skills Curriculum (previously ‘Laparoscopic Driving Test’):

Individuals: the Laparoscopic Skills Curriculum (LSC) is now available for Individuals as well as Institutions. Subscribe to either Core or Advanced modules and one of our assessors will monitor your progress, grade your performances and award a certificate on completion.

Below are two LSC Core and two LSC Advanced sample modules. Access to the Laparoscopic Skills Curriculum is now included with all eoSim take home simulators.

Note: you can also use the foam strips (eoSim Pro & upwards) for this task. These replicate the behaviour of a necrotic appendix – if the ligature is placed too tightly it will cut through, if not tied correctly it will slip when the tube divided.
